Going Over the Prevention Edge - No More Safety

The model of preventionMedicine-led preventionDrugs, diagnostics, and clinical monitoring manage risk at scale.
Public health's permission to actConstant political resistancePublic health remains a routine target and its powers are tightly constrained.
The threat environmentCompounding known threatsHeat, smoke, disasters, outbreaks, and displacement increasingly arrive together.
Defining characteristics
Shifting away from upstream prevention and moving towards secondary/tertiary prevention. Political resistance will drive rising healthcare costs and continue pulling back of healthcare supports.
Central theme
Compounding known threats are harder to address because people only show up in the tertiary phase (i.e., they already have the disease, morbidity is evident, outbreaks are happening) - "putting band aids on wounds."
The new normal
Reactionary - PH has always strived to be proactive by focusing on upstream interventions...naming systems that'll impact racism and health outcomes. Wiped away the progress made through / immediately after pandemic.
Broken assumption
Public health is for the good of the people
