Invisible Elephants in the Room

Individual and movement powerHigh-leverage disruptionOne actor or small group can rapidly destabilize health behavior or systems.
How health truth is establishedSynthetic fogFalse and real content become too difficult to distinguish at scale.
Public health's permission to actPlace-dependent permissionLegitimacy and powers differ sharply across states and communities.
Defining characteristics
Who is scientific authority? Information comes from other places. We don't define scientific authority the same as we used to. Fragmenting of understanding. This is why one actor can cause disruption.
Central theme
Uncertainty. Social contract doesn't hold to help us understand what we don't know
The new normal
There are a lot of "invisible elephants in the room", big things happening that we aren't discussing- this feel strange and unsettling
We don't see science the same way. The assumption of public health no longer holds.
